Cathryn Frazier-Neely, Soprano

Performing Experience

Washington, DC soprano Cathryn Frazier-Neely, "a local favorite", (Fairfax Journal,) has received consistent outstanding reviews for her work in opera ("vocal suppleness and emotional depth", Washington Post) oratorio ("sang with accomplishment and charm", The Pilot, Southern Pines, NC)) recital ("style and confidence...a whole program full of bright ideas and relatively neglected repertoire", The Washington Post) and in concert with local orchestras ("ravishing delivery...one longs to hear this soprano sing the gem-like solo in Mahler's wintry fourth symphony" Fairfax Journal.)

Her performing career B.C.—Before Children—focused on contemporary chamber music, chamber opera, recital, and as soloist with orchestras, including numerous American art song premiers in eight languages.

Highlights of past seasons include appearing in a full recital of Nordic art song for the American Scandinavian Association at The Music Center at Strathmore and for the National Museum of Women in the Arts in conjunction with their 2005 exhibit "Nordic Cool: Hot Female Designers"; opening Piccolo Spoleto's Contemporary Music Festival with The Amoroso Chamber Consort; appearing as soprano soloist with the John Cage Festival Orchestra under the direction of John Cage; and in recital at The US Capitol Building.

Opera/musical theater credits include the roles of "Fiordiligi" in Mozart's Cosi fan Tutte, "The Mother" in Amahl and the Night Visitors, "The Mother", "Sandman" and "The Dewfairy" in Humperdinck's Hansel and Gretal...and A.C.—After Children—a reading of "Elizabeth" in Chris Patton's Reunion at Signature Theater with Tony award-winning director Eric Shaeffer; "Aslan, the lion" (the first woman cast in this role) in Thomas Tierney's Narnia, and in a Washington area tour as "The Grouch" in Robert Kapilow's Green Eggs and Ham where she also trained the boy sopranos who appeared as Sam-I-Am.

In 1987 Ms. Neely founded The Washington Vocal Consortium, four singer/teachers who have pioneered the art and science of team voice teaching. This visionary team has attracted national attention with feature articles in The Washington Post and Classical Singer Magazine, and have appeared as panelists for the national convention of The National Association of Teachers of Singing in Philadelphia. Their "Vehicular Vocalizes", a practice-in-your-car tape/CD with accompanying booklet, is in its second printing.

Ms. Neely is a former third-place national winner in The Contemporary Record Society's National Soloists' Competition and is a published composer with Arsis Press. She holds the M.Mus. in Vocal Performance and Vocal Pedagogy from The University of Maryland, College Park, MD and the B.Mus. in Vocal Performance with a minor in keyboard accompanying from The College of Wooster, Wooster, Ohio.

Recently she earned certification in "Somatic Voicework" from Shenandoah College's Institute for Contemporary and Commercial Music Vocal Pedagogy.

"Cate" comes from a family of professional musicians, including her parents, brothers Jim Frazier, a recording producer in Nashville whose original music can be heard on TV's America's Next Top Model hosted by Tyra Banks, and Mark W. Frazier, Director of Music Ministries of South Congregational Church in Concord, New Hampshire, son Adam Neely, and cousin, Jordon Frazier, double bassist for The internationally renowned Orpheus Chamber Orchestra.
